The risk that names this section is plain enough to state and harder to feel: as generative AI becomes the default mediator of writing, speaking, and reasoning, the variety of those activities narrows. Not because anyone wants it to. Because millions of small daily acts of cognitive offloading all draw, in the aggregate, from a small pool of dominant data.

Gesnot calls the result cognitive standardization — the progressive homogenization, on a global scale, of how thoughts get formed and expressed. The diagnosis is older than generative AI; mass media offered earlier versions of it. What is new is the granularity at which standardization now operates. Not every newspaper, but every paragraph; not every film, but every sentence.

The argument in one paragraph

Large language models are trained on a corpus that overrepresents English-speaking, Western, industrialized, urban writing. Their outputs reflect that overrepresentation, even when the user is not English-speaking, not Western, not urban. As more users defer more decisions about phrasing, framing, and judgment to those outputs, the distribution of ways-things-get-said tightens around what the training data already preferred. The same is true, with adjustments, for recommendation models that mediate what one reads, recommendation models that mediate what one watches, and code-completion models that mediate what one builds. The dominant corpus becomes the unconscious of the next thing written, watched, or built.

A 2024 French Senate report uses the phrase that organizes this whole section: the dominance of AI by Anglo-Saxon actors “risks strongly accentuating the cultural hegemony of the United States,” impoverishing linguistic and cultural diversity, while creating “cognitive standardization.”1 The phrasing is political, but the mechanism is technical.

What “homogenization” actually looks like

A 2024 study by Doshi and colleagues paired Indian participants with a Western-trained text-completion system and watched what happened to their prose. The participants accepted the model’s suggestions. Over a session, their writing drifted toward English-language Western norms — losing nuances of vocabulary, syntax, and rhetorical structure that had marked it as theirs at the start.2 The authors’ summary is striking: AI “homogenized writing toward Western styles by silently erasing non-Western modes of expression.”

The word silently is the point. No reader and no writer noticed at the sentence level. Each accepted suggestion was a small improvement, locally defensible — a slight clarification, a smoother transition. The flattening was visible only in aggregate.

The same pattern, with different specifics, has been documented in classrooms, where ChatGPT’s preference for formal academic English crowds out dialect, register, and idiom in students’ work — not because teachers ask for that, but because the model offers it.3 Educational researchers call this linguistic homogenization: the erasure, by quiet preference, of “the richness and complexity of the languages students bring with them.”

The “WEIRD” critique

Psychologists have a long-standing acronym for the cultural skew in their own field’s research subjects: WEIRD — Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic. The same acronym now applies to AI training data, with the same warning attached. Outputs trained on a WEIRD corpus reflect WEIRD assumptions about argument structure, evidence, etiquette, and what counts as a reasonable opinion. When such outputs become globally available, they exert centripetal pressure on every culture that consumes them.4

This is not (only) a problem of individual articles being wrong. It is a problem of the space of available phrasings shrinking. A culture’s range of ways to say something is part of how it thinks. As the range narrows, certain thoughts become harder to formulate — not impossible, but slower, less fluent, less likely to occur.

Why “use it or lose it” applies here too

Cognitive standardization sits adjacent to cognitive offloading. Both involve deferring some part of the mind’s work to a machine. Offloading does it for a single mental operation (memory, calculation); standardization does it for style, framing, and judgment. Both incur the same long-term cost: the part of thinking that we no longer practice atrophies. The cost is greater here because the offloaded function — noticing what is one’s own — is precisely what would let one detect the standardization while it is happening.

A Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon study of professional knowledge workers found that high trust in generative AI tracks with a measurable decline in critical thinking and an “atrophy” of independent analytical skill.5 The participants offloaded the most cognitively expensive parts of their work — and produced fewer creative responses, evaluating the AI’s outputs less rigorously over time.6

What can be preserved, and how

The hard question of this section — taken up properly in Preserving Cognitive Diversity (C.17) — is whether anything can be done about cognitive standardization without giving up the genuine benefits of fluent assistance. Three answers recur in the literature: education (build habits of noticing the model’s preferences before accepting them); technical countermeasures (fine-tuning, non-Anglocentric training corpora, locally-developed models); and regulation (transparency requirements, mandatory disclosure of training-data composition). None is sufficient alone.

The framing this encyclopedia takes from Gesnot is that cognitive standardization is not a moral failure of any particular tool. It is an emergent property of a particular way of building these tools — one in which a few large training runs become, by default, the substrate of how a planet does its thinking. The encyclopedia is, in part, an attempt to make that substrate visible.
